The stock market performed well in 2024, with the S&P 500 rising around 23% to record highs, continuing the strong gains seen in 2023. Shares in some companies have risen in price to record levels, up to fivefold.
This is the first time since the late 1990s that the index has posted annual returns above 20% twice in a row. The S&P 500 ended the year within 4% of its all-time high and most experts expect the gains to continue through 2025.
