Indonesian Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita met with Apple Vice President of Global Government Affairs Nick Ammann on January 7 to discuss Apple’s investment proposal.

The company, together with partners in Indonesia, plans to build an AirTag assembly factory and launch it next year. In addition, Cupertino residents are investing $1 billion in local emergency response.

For the minister, judging by his statement, this was not enough:

If it’s only $1 billion, it won’t be enough. Currently, the ministry has no reason to issue local certificates to Apple to authorize the sale of the iPhone 16, since the said factory in Indonesia is not directly related to the iPhone. The ministry will only pay attention to factories with phone components.

The iPhone 16 sales ban will not count until Apple stops producing any iPhone components.
