Brazilian judge Douglas de Melo Martins ruled that Apple and Google were responsible for distributing the photo-editing app FaceApp, which is accused of “improperly collecting sensitive data” from its users.
According to the country’s legislation, the platform prohibits the “massive and inappropriate collection of monetary data” without the consent of users. In addition, the service does not provide terms of use and privacy policies translated into written language.
Both companies were fined $3 million for distributing the app in Brazil. Apple and Google also calculated payouts of 500 reais ($82) to every Brazilian resident who downloaded and used FaceApp in June 2020.
Apple and Google deny the accusations and say they have nothing to do with the service’s privacy policy. A third party is responsible for it. [9to5]
