It follows that these oil companies produce more than 1 million barrels of oil per day worth approximately $23 billion, which represents more than Jamaica’s GDP ($19.42 billion in 2023, according to the Trading Economics portal).

The profits of Gazpromneft and Surgutneftegaz are used to finance the military operation in Ukraine, the British Foreign Office added. They hope that sanctions against these companies will reduce Russia’s ability to earn revenue from the sale of energy resources.

The ministry also recalled that in December 2024, Prime Minister Keir Starmer imposed restrictions on 20 ships carrying Russian oil. In total, 93 vessels are currently subject to British sanctions.

Previously, the US Treasury imposed sanctions against Gazpromneft and Surgutneftegaz, explaining the measures as a fight against the “shadow fleet”, international ships that transport Russian oil products to non-Western countries.

Other companies and individuals associated with the oil industry also fell under US restrictions, including Rosneft subsidiary Rosneftefflot and Tatneft CEO Nail Maganov.
