Wendy Bazilian, RPH, MS, registered dietitian nutritionist and host of the 1000 Waking Minutes podcast, notes that bad cholesterol leads to plaque buildup, while good cholesterol helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream.

Nutritionist Samantha DeVito also shared why walnuts are the best food to lower cholesterol.

Walnuts contain many nutrients that help lower cholesterol.

vegetable protein. 28 grams of walnuts provide 4 grams of protein. Research shows that eating more protein from plant-based foods can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease.

Fiber. 28 grams of walnuts provide 2 grams of fiber. It helps lower cholesterol levels.

unsaturated fats. Walnuts contain two types of heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats. These are alpha-linoleic acid and omega-3.

antioxidants. Walnuts are rich in polyphenols. They improve overall heart function and may help increase good cholesterol levels in people with metabolic syndrome.

Substances beneficial to the intestines. Walnuts support the growth and activity of beneficial intestinal bacteria. This happens due to fiber and polyphenols.
