In a new study, a team of scientists examined the relationship between epilepsy and brain function, other common brain diseases, and their underlying mechanisms. To do this, experts analyzed data from 426,527 people from the British Biobank. Of these, 3,251 had epilepsy at baseline.

Epilepsy has been shown to have consistent deleterious effects on cognitive and motor functions and mental health. During the 17-year follow-up period, people with the disease had a significantly increased risk of developing neurological diseases and mental disorders.

Various brain regions associated with epilepsy have also been identified. Including the pallidum, hippocampus, and precentral areas. Mediating effects were seen for peripheral markers and proteins. This means that the liver and lipid metabolism play a role in the development of brain disorders in people with epilepsy.
