In a new study published in the journal Nature Microbiology, experts discovered how the Enterobacteriaceae group of bacteria protects us from harmful bacteria. It turns out that the intestinal environment shaped by diet plays a major role in controlling potentially harmful bacteria.
In the new study, experts analyzed more than 12,000 stool samples from people in 45 countries. It turned out that the microbiome composition of people carrying Enterobacteriaceae was fundamentally different from that of participants who did not carry these bacteria.
Faecalibacterium is one of the rare bacterial phyla along with Enterobacteriaceae. However, it plays an important role because it produces chemicals called short-chain fatty acids. This helps stop the growth of harmful bacteria such as Enterobacteriaceae.
