US President-elect Donald Trump’s team is developing a sanctions strategy for a peace deal with Russia, which involves two scenarios. Informed sources reported this to Bloomberg.

According to them, the first option assumes that the military operation in Ukraine could end soon, and then the United States will introduce relief for Russian oil companies under sanctions. For example, we may be talking about raising the maximum price of Russian oil above $60 per barrel.
The second approach is to tighten restrictions to further increase pressure on Russia, the interlocutors noted. It could include strengthening secondary sanctions over trading Russian oil with European shippers and Asian buyers, including against companies from China and India, as well as tighter controls on tankers carrying Russian oil.
Trump, whose inauguration will take place on January 20, will choose the strategy. An important time to make a decision will be mid-March, when the US license to purchase Russian energy resources expires. If the country’s Finance Ministry does not extend it, this could increase pressure on the Kremlin, Bloomberg writes.
Additionally, current President Joe Biden’s administration, before leaving, made it more difficult for Trump to lift sanctions. Now the future head of the country must notify his decisions to Congress, which may not approve them.
Previously, in a Senate hearing, US Secretary of State candidate Marco Rubio allowed the lifting of sanctions against Russia as part of the solution to the military operation in Ukraine.
The politician emphasized that the restrictions give Washington “pressure leverage” on Russia, so “sanctions and their lifting” should “be part of this dialogue to reach an agreement.”
