In January 2018, ozone levels exceeding 100 ppbv were recorded in China. Their peak was 121 ppbv.
Scientists have found that the main factor in ozone formation is the ozone decomposition of alkenes, not traditional radical sources. Alkenes comprised almost 90% of ozone during pollution events.
The key alkenes contributing to the unusual contamination are trans/cis-2-butene and propene.
The results of the new study were published in the journal Environmental Science and Ecotechnology.
