Murati’s initiative, which is yet to be named and is in the early stages of development, has so far attracted around 10 researchers and engineers from major artificial intelligence companies such as OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Character AI. The company does not yet have a clear direction for product development.

Murati’s departure from OpenAI follows a period of leadership turmoil that included the sudden dismissal (along with his swift reinstatement) of CEO Sam Altman. Murati briefly served as interim CEO during the crisis, but Altman was soon reinstated after employees threatened to resign.
