Amid a flurry of repeals and repeals of his predecessor’s decrees on his first day in office, Donald Trump announced it had rescinded former President Biden’s executive order, which Microsoft once considered “critical.” The order was intended to protect workers, consumers and national security interests from potential harm caused by new artificial intelligence technologies.

The move comes amid a tense first day in office for Trump, in which he reversed some 75 executive orders from the previous president. In its statement Tuesday, the Trump administration also said Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives have “corrupted” American institutions by “replacing hard work, merit and equality with a divisive and dangerous hierarchy of preferential treatment.”
However, Trump’s actions are not unexpected, as he has campaigned heavily on a promise to roll back AI consumer protections throughout the 2024 election cycle. He said he would “support the development of AI based on freedom of speech and human flourishing.” Despite similar announcements about replacing the Affordable Care Act during his previous term, Trump has not provided any details about what that alternative would actually look like. It remains to be seen whether Biden’s AI defense will disappear for good, as Trump himself has previously said generative AI technologies are a “superpower” offering “alarming” potential.
