According to the Financial Times, the deal is part of Google’s efforts to diversify its AI business and combat rivals such as Microsoft, Meta* and Amazon.

According to the newspaper’s interlocutors, Anthropic is also close to receiving another $2 billion from Silicon Valley venture investors, led by the Lightspeed Venture Partners fund. The deal is expected to triple the startup’s valuation to about $60 billion.

Anthropic also previously received investments from Amazon. Over the past year and a half, the IT giant has invested $8 billion in the startup, and the company is now working to introduce Claude to the next generation of its Alexa smart speakers, the FT notes.

In October, The Wall Street Journal wrote that Google plans to invest $2 billion in Anthropic. According to Bloomberg sources, this deal has already been closed. Anthropic declined to comment and a Google representative did not respond to the agency’s request.
