Modifications are being made to the Civil Code. Currently, self-employed workers can only register trademarks and commercial designations are only available to individual entrepreneurs and legal entities.
The initiative aims to equalize the rights of self-employed workers with those of companies and individual entrepreneurs, media lawyer Svetlana Kuzevanova explained to RB.RU. “Before the self-employed could not register trademarks, for example, but now they have been presented with this opportunity,” explained the expert.
She believes that, first of all, trade designations are useful for specialists who have been on the market for a long time and have managed to establish themselves enough to create a recognizable brand.

Experts interviewed by Kommersant also supported the initiative, but warned of the difficulties of its implementation due to the lack of proper registration.
“In Russia there is no state register of commercial designations, so they can only be registered in regional non-state registers, which is recommended at the level of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, but does not provide full protection of intellectual property” .
