The growth of emissions is against the background of the promise of reducing Amazon’s carbon trail to zero by 2040. In 2022 and 2023, the company reduced indirect emissions on electrical purchase, construction of data centers and logistics of third parties. At the same time, direct emissions on its own transportation and logistics have been increasing steadily since 2019.
As a part of the environmental strategy, Amazon buys electric cars from the manufacturer Rivian and already provides more than 31,000 vans worldwide. In parallel, however, the company expands the delivery network, including rural areas, leads to an increase in total load and energy consumption in the infrastructure.
The use of artificial intelligence requires more electricity for the operation of data centers. Amazon plans to spend $ 100 billion to develop data centers and logistics compared to Microsoft.
