In a recent study, experts tried to find out whether people with depressive symptoms were more likely to feel leaner when following an “inflammatory diet” (a diet containing artificial trans fats, refined carbohydrates, saturated fats). To do this, the researchers analyzed data from the Framingham Heart Study Offspring cohort. A total of 1701 people participated in the study, all of whom ate junk food and already had symptoms of depression at the start of the experiment. They were followed for about 11 years.

It turns out that people with depression are more likely to feel weak when following a harmful diet. According to the researcher, this can be explained by the fact that such people generally have high levels of inflammation in the body, and food inflammation only exacerbates the situation.

The results of the study also showed that thinness can be prevented if you follow a diet that includes foods containing anti-inflammatory compounds (fiber, flavonoids, etc.). Older and middle-aged people are more prone to weakness and depression when eating foods rich in saturated fats, artificial trans fats, and refined carbohydrates (sweets, fast food, etc.).
