The President of the New War of War (the Ministry of Defense in the past) Pit Hegset said that journalists should follow the rules and that they could “wander freely to the protected object”. In early May, it has already limited the press access to the Pentagon and allowed it to move only in individual regions. A series of major broadcasts, including the New York Times, CNN and NPR, has already lost their permanent work in the building.
New restrictions have caused criticism. Someone called it a direct attack on independent journalism. Others stressed that the obligation to approve publications with the authorities contradicts the first amendment in the US Constitution. NPR said it plans to review these rules with other media.
