In the US, Microsoft has increased prices sharply – the Xbox Series S is now priced at $400 (previously $299), the 1TB version is priced at $450, and the Series X’s price has risen to $650. Special editions with 2TB of storage reach $800.
EB Games has removed Xbox stands in Australia and New Zealand, and in the US, Costco and Sam’s Club are selling the consoles at a discount.
Experts attribute the increase in prices to the increase in customs duties on imports from China. Microsoft stops subsidizing sales in order to preserve profits – consoles are no longer sold at a loss.
According to Digital Foundry, the company is finally preparing to move to a digital model (subscriptions and cloud services). If this trend continues, next-generation consoles could become the most expensive consoles in history.
