Reddit sued Perplexity and three other data collection companies (SerpApi, Oxylabs and AWMProxy). The lawsuit alleges that they are all reclaiming Reddit content for AI training.
In May 2024, Reddit sent a letter to Perplexity demanding that it stop collecting data. Then Perplexity stated that it does not use its content and will comply with the rules specified in robots.txt. However, after this letter, the number of links to Reddit on Perplexity increased.
Reddit also created a post that could only be indexed by Google, and “within hours,” Perplexity “provided a “Category” for the post, the company said. The lawsuit also states that Confusion “appears to be willing to do anything to obtain the Reddit data it desperately needs to fuel its ‘answer machine.’
