According to insider and journalist Jez Corden, the company is developing an emulator that will let you run Xbox games directly on Windows, including portable devices like the ROG Xbox Ally.

Corden talked about it on the Xbox Two podcast and revealed on the Xbox Era community Discord server that the project could be ready in late 2025 or early 2026.

According to him, Microsoft is working on a solution similar to the Xbox 360 backward compatibility system; that is, an emulation of a limited number of games available on Windows.

However, support will not be comprehensive as launching the technology will require licensing agreements with publishers and developers.

For now, the ROG Xbox Ally remains essentially a Windows 11 gaming PC that requires manual setup. If the rumor is confirmed, the new emulator will make the device “more Xbox-like”; launching games will be easier and faster, just like on a console.

Corden also hinted that Microsoft will release a variety of Xbox form factors in the future, including more “PC-like” TV solutions and devices powered by new AMD chips that are simultaneously compatible with Windows and Xbox games.
