At the end of May last year, the dark secret of DuckDuckGo became known. Through reports from a security researcher, it has been confirmed that the service is not as secure as promised. Today, the company finally came up with a fix. Through their website, they confirm that next month they will start blocking Microsoft trackers.

In said publication, DuckDuckGo Ensures Microsoft Requirements Are No Longer Required. “We are pleased to announce that this is no longer the case. We have not had and do not have such restrictions with any other company, ”they said in a statement.

The basic premise of DuckDuckGo is that it allows you to browse the Internet safely. To do this, they block trackers that you can find on each of the websites, including their own or third-party ones. However, the investigation showed that Microsoft trackers were not blocked by some agreement between the two companies.

Apparently politics requires DuckDuckGo to run trackers from Microsoft when using Bing. This is known to be the preferred search engine used by the service when displaying private search results.

We were limited in how we applied our third-party tracker download protection to Microsoft tracking scenarios due to a policy requirement related to using Bing as the source for our private search results.

In addition, it was known that Microsoft was able to extract information from users click on ads on the Internet, even if they are not from the company. This was part of the above agreement.

Luckily, it doesn’t seem like there’s anything else to worry about. According to DuckDuckGo, Microsoft Advertising committed not to bind user behavior when accessing any online advertising. In addition, you may not store information or pass it on to third parties.

“When you click on a Microsoft-provided ad that appears on DuckDuckGo, Microsoft Advertising does not link your ad behavior to a user profile,” the service confirms in a post.

Yes indeed advertisers will still be able to see click through rates through Microsoft scripts. However, DuckDuckGo states that this information is rather limited, so there is nothing to worry about. If you want to increase security, you can always disable ads in the service settings.
