Mark Blagrove, a psychology professor at Swansea University, states that experts today know the mechanism of dreams. For example, a person is more likely to dream during REM sleep than during non-REM sleep. There is also evidence of the existence of a special region of the brain that initiates and “turns off” dreams. However, scientists still do not understand why people dream.

One possible explanation, according to the professor, is that dreams have no function. And they occur as a byproduct of natural processes that occur in the brain while a person is sleeping.

But there are other explanations as well. For example, one theory that explains why we have nightmares suggests that we deliberately create various threats to overcome obstacles. Another theory claims that a person simply simulates his own social world in a dream.

The most famous theory about dreams is this. According to this assumption, the person integrates memories during sleep and transforms recent memories into long-term ones. This was proven in one study: People who slept were better at remembering different stories than those who were awake.

Based on this, it turns out that dreams are either part of the process of systematizing memories or a similar product of this process.

It is also known that people constantly think and speak figuratively. Psychologist Blagrove says that all these metaphors are embodied in dreams.
