A recent study of Humboldt squid states that these animals have a distinctive pattern tongue found on their bodies. Another study in Japan found that oval squids, such as octopuses, can change their body color to match the color of surrounding objects to hide from predators.

Sometimes octopus and squid can be difficult to distinguish. To do this, you just need to count their limbs. Octopuses have eight limbs with suction cups that extend from the beginning to the end of these limbs. On the other hand, squids have ten limbs with suckers, and two of them have suckers only at the ends. With these two additional tentacles, squids capture their prey.

In total there are about 300 species of octopus and about the same number of squid. Many octopuses live close to the seafloor. In addition, they are often solitary and almost always asocial in groups of relatives.

Additionally, octopuses differ from squid in the way they produce offspring. In octopuses, male and female mate first, then the female lays eggs in a safe place and watches them until the young hatch. Squids, on the other hand, mate in groups and lay eggs that attach to rocks, algae and corals to take care of them.
