Since Tuesday, Google has started rolling out the latest Android version: Android 13. The latest Android version is currently only available as an update for Google Pixel devices, later Android 13 will be available for a number of other devices and new models as well.

After a few months of testing, Android 13 is officially available. This was faster than Android versions 11 and 12. They came out in September 2020 and October 2021, respectively. The release of Android 13 may be earlier than previous Android versions as the update does not bring such big changes.

It is mainly based on the new visual style ‘Material You’, which radically changes Android 12. For example, system colors are adjusted to your personal preference and background. In Android 13 this has been improved a bit with more palette colors and style icons. At the time of writing, only Google apps have icons set to your personal preference.

Also noteworthy are the new playback notifications. Speaking of notifications: Now every app you install should ask for permission to send notifications. Very nice. You can launch a QR code scanner (a feature Samsung Galaxy users have known for years) from the quick settings and the clipboard has changed. For example, if you copy text, you can update it before pasting. Finally, a useful option has been added to set the language per application.

Other features allow better collaboration with a Chromebook, such as syncing messages. Bluetooth Low Energy is supported and will provide more in the future especially for wireless audio. Learn more about the new features of Android 13 on the Android site or in our Android 13 article.

Availability Android 13

For now, Android 13 is only available on fourth, fifth and sixth generation Google Pixel smartphones. These smartphones are not officially available in the Netherlands. The rollout of Pixel smartphones is not like iPhones where all devices get the update at the same time. Android smartphones are gradually being rolled out. If you have a Pixel smartphone and the update hasn’t appeared yet, you can force it by enrolling your Pixel in the Android beta program (and then unsubscribing again).

Do you have an Android smartphone from another brand, you should be patient before Android 13 becomes available and the manufacturer announces which devices will receive updates and when.
