Android apps that haven’t received updates on the Google Play Store for two years will be hidden in the app store. The new measure will come into effect on 1 November 2022.
Google expects app developers to update their apps at least annually to keep up with the new features that Android version updates bring. In this way, Google guarantees that apps developed during an old Android version will also continue to work with the newest version.
For example, the latest Android version has an option to assign location, camera or microphone permission to a once. For example, to scan a QR code to link the app to an account. Older apps that don’t include this Android feature may not work properly because the app doesn’t expect to always have or never have access to the camera.
Policy change
In a blog post, Google announced that old apps will be hidden in the Play Store. They can no longer be found, but also no longer installed by users. With this, Google forces developers to maintain their apps with an extra year of ‘tolerance’.
From 1 November, the new rules will be followed by Google. When an app hasn’t been updated for more than two years, developers can easily update the existing app. After all, the app remains available in the Play Store as it is hidden from users.
This policy change is not expected to have a major impact on most well-known apps. These are actively maintained by the developers. However, an app you love to use may suddenly become unwatchable starting in November.
