The Chinese auto concern Chery, which has a localization project with Sollers Auto (the group includes UAZ), abandoned the idea of producing cars at the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant site. This is reported by the newspaper “Vedomosti” with reference to sources.

Chinese automaker Chery refused to localize production at UAZ

The main reason is that UAZ was placed on the EU sanctions list in early June.

One of the newspaper’s interlocutors believes that Chery can discuss the possibility of locating it in another place in Sóllers. In addition to UAZ, the Russian company still has joint ventures with Ford in Yelabuga and Mazda in Vladivostok (both joint ventures have been frozen).

Another source said the Chinese automaker is considering various options to localize production in Russia, even without Sollers Auto’s involvement. Thus, the concern can take the place of any of the Western automakers, if it decides to leave.

Vedomosti’s interlocutor believes that local Chery products can be presented in Russia not under the main brand (the Chinese company has Exeed, Omoda and Jetour sub-brands under the Chery brand).
