In 2024, Apple may dare to move both its front-facing camera and Face ID under the screen of its high-end devices, making the iPhone 16 Pro a likely first candidate for such an upgrade. At least that’s what analyst Ming-Chi Kuo thinks.

Kuo made this prediction in a couple of tweets, referring to comments he made last month saying that Apple is unlikely to release new iPhones with under-display fingerprint scanners in less than two years..

And the reason for delaying this moment would be none other than maximize FaceID technology, which has suffered greatly in these two years with the advent of maskssomething that has been shown to cost Apple’s security system.

I think a true full screen iPhone will arrive in 2024. High-end 2024 iPhones will use an under-display front-facing camera along with under-display Face ID. Low light conditions degrade the quality of the front camera, and the ISP and algorithm are critical to improve the quality.“, he says in a tweet.

Kuo himself suggests that the solution will be to improve the ISP (Image Signal Processor) and image algorithms.. As has been clear for years, phone image quality is increasingly dependent on digital processing, and Apple continues to improve its own cameras year after year.

Kuo also predicted that this year’s iPhone 14 will have an improved front camera with autofocus capabilities and a larger aperture.

However, it’s unclear what Apple will do with the Face ID hardware for this upcoming model. Some speculate that it will be housed in a smaller pill-shaped cutout as a prelude to hiding it completely under the screen.
