The European Parliament has passed a law requiring all electronics manufacturers to use USB-C as a charger by the end of 2024.
The law requires manufacturers of smartphones, tablets, cameras, game consoles, portable electronic speakers, books, keyboards, mice, laptops and navigators to use USB-C if the charging power is not more than 100 watts.
Device exception too small for USB-C installation. These include smartwatches, fitness bracelets and sports equipment.
Primarily directed against Apple, which continues to use Lightning in iPhones and AirPods. Other smartphone manufacturers have long switched to USB-C.
Apple responded against passing the law. The company said it would expand e-waste and limit innovation.
Apple is rumored to release the iPhone 15 with USB-C next year. Also in 2023, the company will introduce USB-C charging cases for AirPods 3 and AirPods Pro 2nd generation.
