As the head of the Michigan State University research team said, the impact of the asteroid released energy “equivalent to the yield of 10 billion atomic bombs used during World War II.” This caused intense seismic activity that lasted “from several weeks to several months,” according to the scientists.
The researchers learned this by studying geographic patterns from Colombia, Mexico, and the United States at the time of impact. They also confirmed that the disaster caused a major tsunami.
