It reflects the RAE in the first sense of “romanticism”, which is: a cultural movement that developed in Europe from the end of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century and which, unlike neoclassicism, exalts creative freedom, fantasy and feelings. It was this thing, creative freedom, that led to Alfons Lowenberg and Anton Konrad create Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Back to 1974 when a creative as well as romantic light went on for the young engineer and public relations director of Volkswagen: they dreamed of making a sporty and fun version of the Golf (which appeared the same year). And it seems that they did not lose … Levenberg and Konrad embroidered.

It all started with the Volkswagen Golf base. They set 1.6 L engine with two Weber carburetors inherited from the Volkswagen Scirocco and equipped with stiffer suspension borrowed from rally cars. There was no one to supervise this, and it seemed that all efforts would go unnoticed.

But through trial and error, perseverance and resistance, they surreptitiously convinced the other brand employees they worked with. They created a working group called Golf sports team.

Levenberg and Konrad could not do this alone and joined four other fundamentalists in this project: Herman Habitzel, golf developer, Jurgen Adlerinterior engineer, Herbert Shuster, chief tester and Horst-Dieter Schwittlinski, marketing.

From the hiding place of the garage They took parts from other cars with three clear goals: to drive properly, to be comfortable and economical. They adapted items such as steering from Scirocco, 1.6-litre engine from Audi 80 GT and seats from Recaro. At the end of 1974, the Sport Golf project was already sounding at the plant in St. Wolfsburg.

A year later and after many hours of work, two unknowns stood up to decide how they were going to modify it aesthetically and what they were going to call it. For him 1975 Frankfurt Motor Showthe brand team approved the presentation of the car.

Precisely the Volkswagen Golf GTI was presented with 1588 cc engine with Bosch K-Jetronic electronic injection, 110 hp. at 6100 rpm.. With a weight of 810 kg, Sport Golf was able to accelerate from zero to hundreds in nine seconds. The success was immediate.

No one was going to distort the lines outlined by Alfons Levenberg and Anton Konrad. His idea came to fruition beautifully. During a crisis like the one in 1975, they were convinced that there was a niche in the market for an economical, simple car, but with a sporty touch.

The stubbornness of these two characters and the collaboration of the other four people on the team led to the birth of one of the best projects in history. It’s not us talking, it’s sales talking, and that the story continues 47 years later.
