In a recent study, Giacomo Baima, MD, of the University of Turin in Italy, and colleagues estimated how common periodontitis is in people with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis (bowel disease). The analysis included 180 people with inflammatory bowel disease and 180 healthy people.
They found that more people with inflammatory bowel disease had moderately severe periodontitis (65.6% versus 85.6%) or severe periodontitis (36.7% versus 25.6%) compared to healthy controls. This was most noticeable among those aged 35-50 and 51-65.
Overall, patients with inflammatory bowel disease were 3.5 times more likely to develop moderate/severe periodontitis.
