The global disruption of WhatsApp caused the daily audience of Telegram in Russia to increase to 50 million users. On the day of the accident, October 25, the audience exceeded this mark for the first time since October 2021.
The growth of Telegram’s average daily audience on the day of the WhatsApp failure to more than 50 million users was noted in Mediascope. They clarified that it is difficult to know if this figure was the highest for the entire period of observations, since historical data is not comparable due to improvements in estimation technologies.
Between October 1 and 25, Telegram’s average daily audience grew to 46.7 million users, up from 43.8 million between September 1 and 25. The WhatsApp audience for the analyzed periods decreased from 73.7 million to 73.5 million users.
On October 25, there was a global failure in the WhatsApp messenger, so it did not work for two hours. The owner of WhatsApp (Metaplatforms, whose activities are recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation) did not mention the reason for the failure.
