US government apps for iOS and Android used by Pushwoosh software to send push notifications. After it became known that this company is from Russia, they began to remove the Pushwoosh code from applications, Reuters reports.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Pushwoosh believes the company. Reuters journalists told the agency that Pushwoosh is a Russian company. The CDC then made the decision to remove the Pushwoosh code from seven of its apps, citing outside security.
The Pushwoosh code is also used by the US Army. In particular, it is contained in the application for one of the country’s main military training bases. An army spokesman said the Pushwoosh code was removed from the app in March.
Pushwoosh is headquartered in Akademgorodok in Novosibirsk. On social media and in U.S. regulatory documents, it is presented as an American company based at various times in the U.S. state of California.
Founder and head of Pushvush, Maxim Konev, told Reuters that the company has never relaxed with the closure of the Russian assignment.
I am proud that I am Russian and would never hide it.
Maxim Konev, CEO of Pushwoosh
He also added that the company has nothing to do with the Russian government and stores its data in the US and Germany.
Security experts have said that storing data does not guarantee its security, as Russian intelligence agencies choose the Pushwoosh team to access classified information. [Reuters]
