Spain, which is an “unfriendly” country for Russia, has tripled the issuance of Schengen visas to Russians. Since the beginning of the year, the number of Schengen visas issued has almost reached 109,000, while many European countries have stopped issuing visas to Russians altogether.
Since the beginning of 2022, Spain has issued 108,800 short-term Schengen visas to Russians, almost triple the number in the same period of 2021. Bloomberg writes about this, citing data from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Spain is a member of the European Union, which means that it has the status of “unfriendly” to Russia.
At the same time, the number of Spanish “Schengen” issued has not yet reached the values prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the agency notes. The upward trend in visa issuance indicates that Russians tend to visit Western European countries more often, Bloomberg clarifies.
Several European countries, including Finland, the Czech Republic, Latvia and Lithuania, have placed restrictions on entry into their countries, as well as on the issuance of Schengen visas after the start of the special operation in Ukraine.
Since February 28, Russian airlines have been prohibited from entering the airspace of EU countries. The same restriction was established by the authorities of Great Britain, the United States, Canada.
