Apple has said it won’t scan iCloud photos for banned photos. This was announced by WIRED, the information was confirmed by Craig Federighi, Apple’s vice president of software development.

Following extensive sites with experts to collect feedback on child protection initiatives we proposed last year, we are now doing our research on the Communication Safety feature, which we first made available in December 2021. In addition, we have decided not to promote the CSAM detection tool for photos in iCloud that we proposed earlier. Children can be copied into personal data without companies, and we owners will act with restrictions, child advocates and big ones to help young people, preserve their privacy rights and make the Internet a safer place for children and for all of us.

Apple released Powerful Photo to iCloud in August 2021, but never added it to iOS. It was found that the system automatically searches for images that show detected diseases in children.

Immediately after the announcement of the feature, Apple was criticized by human rights activists, security experts and officials. [WIRED]
