A new scientific paper outlines how microbes can be used to solve global and local problems that might otherwise lead to conflict. The authors also say that these resources are underutilized to date.
Professor Kenneth Timmis explained that the worldwide shortage of essential resources such as drinking water, healthy food, access to basic health care and a clean environment can lead to competition between countries. In some cases, conflicts may arise. “There is an urgent need to reduce such scarcity, to equalize and secure essential resources for all people… There is a wide range of powerful microbial technologies that can enable or facilitate the provision of such resources and services, but the deployment of such technologies is severely underused. ‘ said Professor Timmis.
