The scientists looked at data from 10 million emergency room visits of California residents. Some patients were under the influence of alcohol at the time of injury.
It was determined that the majority of these injuries (76.9%) were unintentional, 13.2% were due to assault, 7.9% to self-harm and 2.1% to unclear intent. More than 5% of these patients died within 12 months of visiting the hospital. The overall mortality rate was about 5,205 per 100,000 people. The researchers determined that this was more than five times the rate for the rest of California’s population.
