The Federation Council profile committee on economic policy reported a drop in the cinema box office by 56-70%. The senators cite such numbers based on data from the Movie Theater Owners Association.
With such a level of decline, theaters cannot pay loans, make repairs and reconstructions, and maintain the premises, TASS writes.
Cinemas lost 4.5 billion rubles. The influx of visitors to the Pushkin map amounted to 30%. This made it possible to withstand the first blow after the start of the special operation in Ukraine.
Several theaters have cut back on weekday showings and show movies only on weekends due to a lack of new products to show. The committee emphasized that cinemas survived the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to government support measures, which are now unavailable.
In March, The Walt Disney, Warner Bros and Sony suspended distribution of their films in Russia amid a special operation in Ukraine. The Ministry of Industry and Commerce added Disney products to the list of goods allowed for parallel importation on November 2. The decision does not apply to film productions.
