According to internal documents, the company also has about 1,400 unemployed employees currently on payroll.
Before Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion, the company had about 7,500 employees. There were already rumors within the company that he was going to be fired soon (even before the purchase). But Musk has done this much earlier.
According to an engineer leaving the company, losing employees and downsizing will make it harder to maintain the service reliably while creating new features. But so far, the social network feels pretty good.
Mass layoffs are not uncommon in the IT industry. For example, Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc, said it laid off about 12,000 people, or 6% of its workforce.
