According to the study’s lead author, people cheat for a variety of reasons. They may be quite happy with their relationship but still betray their partner. For example, people with so-called “avoidant” obsessions may try to maintain distance and control their relationships through infidelity.
“People don’t usually cheat because they plan to do it,” the scammers researcher justifies. “Or rather, the opportunity arose, and they were too exhausted to resist the temptation—too tired, too drunk, and distracted.”
In the study, the authors found that adopting a partner’s point of view reduces sexual and romantic interest in other people. In other words, try to “take the place of someone else” more often.
