The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) issued in 2022 the renunciation of Russian citizenship to 40 applicants. This is reported by TASS with reference to these departments.
The Interior Ministry explained that the renunciation of Russian citizenship is carried out on the basis of a “voluntary expression of will”. Russian citizens residing in the country can apply for the renunciation of Russian citizenship to the migration unit of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs at their place of residence, and those living outside the country can apply to the diplomatic mission or consular office of Russia. Such applications are considered for no more than one year, in a simplified way – no more than three months.
Those who have a “unfulfilled obligation to Russia” may be denied departure, as well as if the applicant is accused in a criminal case or an enforceable court sentence has entered into force against him. Another reason to reject an application is if a person does not have citizenship of another state or guarantees to obtain it.
