Sales of Valentine’s Day gifts in Russia have more than halved, according to a study by analytical resource Chek Index.

Russians are half as likely to buy Valentine’s Day gifts: study

Compared to last year, Russians on the eve of Valentine’s Day made 57% fewer purchases for gifts. At the same time, the average check for such purchases decreased by 4% and amounted to 590 rubles.

This year, the average check for flower bouquets was 1,680 rubles, 10% more expensive than in the past. The number of such purchases decreased by 13%.

The cost of all kinds of sweet gifts since February last year increased by 31%, they began to buy 7% less. The average check is 690 rubles. But the demand for toys only increased, 10% more were bought. The average price is 590 rubles.

In approximately the same volume as in 2022, women’s underwear was purchased. Sales fell just 2%. At the same time, adult products fell in price by 8%. The average cost was 1050 rubles. But the price cut did not help demand, sales fell 36%.

Perfumery and beauty salon services

The number of purchases of perfumery products fell by 14%. The average check was 9% higher than in February 2022 and amounted to 3,050 rubles. Various procedures in beauty salons were purchased with 18% less, and the average check grew by 13% to 1,382 rubles.

The study showed that in the lead up to Valentine’s Day, demand for traditional gift categories continues to decline. This was especially true in the offline sector. At the same time, according to the survey, some citizens do not plan to celebrate the holiday in principle.
