The experts analyzed data from more than 100,000 people who underwent nutritional assessment over a 9.5-year period. In the end, they concluded that a greater intake of free sugars was associated with an increased risk of all heart diseases.
Thus, for every 5% of energy obtained from free sugar, the probability of cardiovascular disease and stroke increased by 7%. However, scientists have found that total carbohydrate intake is not associated with an increased likelihood of such disorders.
What’s more, consuming five more grams of fiber per day was associated with a 4% reduction in overall heart disease risk.
