Scientific studies have shown that vinyl chloride can cause liver cancer. It also causes TASH, i.e. toxic substance-associated steatohepatitis. A person with TASH may develop the same symptoms as people with liver cirrhosis due to alcohol or obesity. This is inflammation of the liver, its injury, the accumulation of fat in it. However, this requires a fairly high level of exposure.
Vinyl chloride is used to form PVC, a rigid plastic added to pipes, some packaging, coatings, and wires. The health risk of this substance was discovered in the 1970s when several workers at the BF Goodrich factory developed a very rare type of tumor – liver angiosarcoma.
Under the influence of vinyl chloride on the liver, a paradoxical combination of several factors occurs. These are normal indicators of liver function, the presence of fat in the liver, and the death of liver cells.
According to recent research, even if vinyl chloride has a minor health impact (if exposure levels are below established levels), it can exacerbate liver disease caused by a diet high in fat and sugar.
