Roskosmos announced when the first mission to the moon in the history of modern Russia will begin. According to the press service of the state corporation, the launch of the Luna-25 spacecraft will take place in mid-July this year.

Roscosmos announced the date of the first Russian mission to the moon

Roskosmos representatives told TASS about this.

“The launch of the Luna-25 spacecraft, taking into account the astronomical “window” in 2023, is scheduled for 07/13/2023,” the message reads.

The mission of the project is to send an automatic probe for research in the south polar region of the moon. According to the project plans, the apparatus will be planted near the Boguslavsky crater.

The name “Luna-25” refers to the Luna-24 project, the last spacecraft in the Soviet lunar program. In April 2022, during the state awards ceremony for cosmonauts, Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would resume missions to the Earth satellite. At the same time, a possible release date was named – the third quarter of 2022.

According to TASS, in September last year, Roscosmos CEO Yuri Borisov spoke about the postponement of the Luna-25 mission until 2023. The first launch of the apparatus, then called Luna Globe, was scheduled for 2015. Since then, it has been rescheduled several times.
