Russian banks that fell under the new US sanctions began warning customers that Chinese UnionPay payment system cards issued by them might stop working abroad.

The sanctioned banks advised customers to withdraw money from UnionPay cards

Zenit, Uralsib, MTS-Bank, Bank St. Petersburg, Bank Primorye recommend withdrawing funds, reports RBC. Lenders issued warning emails to customers after the toughest lockdown sanctions in the US were imposed on them.

The banks ended up on the SDN list, which means the blocking of all assets located in the United States, the cessation of operations in dollars, as well as the risks of introducing secondary sanctions against the associated companies.

In total, five of the 12 Russian UnionPay card issuers, which are listed on the payment system’s website, were under the new US sanctions.

Officially, UnionPay did not announce the suspension of work with Russian banks that fell under the sanctions. However, Promsvyazbank, for example, ceased to be its issuer after entering the SDN list.

Gazprombank and Rosselkhozbank still issue UnionPay cards; these organizations are subject to sectoral US and EU sanctions, but such sanctions do not imply large-scale restrictions like lockdowns.
