Microsoft released a major Windows 11 update on its preview channel this week. Dubbed Moment 2, the KB5022913 update brings Bing and ChatGPT and brings AI functions to the Start Menu.

However, not everything is rosy when updating the operating system. While the solution made searches smarter, the update also caused problems on computers using interface customization apps.

The error is noticed by the Windows owner, who explained that using third-party apps to customize the interface can cause a serious problem with the latest update, even preventing the computer from booting properly. Fortunately, using the system shouldn’t come with any problems if you don’t use this type of solution.

“After installing KB5022913 or the latest update, Windows devices with some third-party interface customization apps may not boot,” Microsoft explains in the official post. “These third-party applications can cause explorer.exe errors that can recur multiple times in a loop. Applications known to be affected are ExplorerPatcher and StartAllBack.”

explorer.exe is File Explorer – that is, the basic functioning of the Windows folder system, so in case of these problems the PC will not boot. Microsoft says it’s investigating the issue and will provide more information soon, but mostly blames apps:

“Such apps often use unsupported methods to deliver their customizations and, as a result, can have undesirable consequences on your Windows device.”

To reduce the problem

The easiest way to avoid the problem is to uninstall these apps before updating. If this has already happened, returning the system to a previous version of Windows 11 should also resolve the situation.

Anyway, the KB5022913 update is still in preview. Users can wait for your final release to see if the issues will be fixed by then and more peacefully test the new AI functions in the Start Menu.
