An article published in the scientific journal Injury Prevention states that electric scooter riders are more likely to be seriously injured in an accident than cyclists. This is especially true for head injuries.
During the study, experts analyzed information for 2021 from the UK Trauma Control and Research Network (TARN) registry. All these data were provided by trauma centers and hospital trauma units in England and Wales.
It turned out that in 2021, 293 electric scooter drivers and 2,538 cyclists were hospitalized after the accident. At the same time, drivers of electric scooters got into the intensive care unit in 60% of cases, cyclists – in 47% of cases.
Electric scooter riders were more likely to have serious injuries to their arms, legs, and heads than cyclists. Hand/leg injuries occurred in 40% of cases (27% vs. cyclists) and head injuries in 35% of cases (vs. 20% for cyclists).
The most serious head injuries were 28% of electric scooter drivers and only 15% of cyclists. In addition, 90% of critical injuries in scooter riders (37 out of 41) were head injuries.
