Vladimir Bengin, Director of the Cybersecurity Department of the Ministry of Digital Transformation, announced the transfer of fraudulent calls to instant messaging. At the same time, calls from regional numbers dropped from 95% to 2-3%.

Fraudsters started calling Russians more often via instant messaging.

The department explained this by the fact that the attackers, faced with problems, began to look for cheaper mechanisms, reports RIA Novosti.

According to Bengin, scammers can still switch back to regional calls until they all connect to a single verification system.

  • Scammers have also become more likely to use the numbers of small telecom operators, this is the “2023 trend”. Against the background of a decrease in the number of Russian numbers available for replacement, scammers should look to foreign sources with whom local operators have not yet established contacts to verify contacts, experts say.
  • In December 2022, the Roskomnadzor Main Radio Frequency Center launched Antifraud, a unified phone call verification (EPVV) platform. The system is needed to combat phone scammers. Now MegaFon, MTS and VimpelCom are connected to the platform.
