A case of measles was confirmed in an unvaccinated person who had recently moved out of the country before attending the event (Kentucky has one of the lowest vaccination rates among preschoolers in the country).

The CDC notes that people with measles are contagious four days before the characteristic rash appears. State health officials said the man was contagious at the time he attended the event.

Experts warn that if the infection gets out of control, it could lead to an epidemic. The virus spreads through direct contact and the air, and can persist for up to two hours after an infected person has left the building.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, up to 90% of unvaccinated people exposed to the virus can become infected. Local, state and federal health officials are pushing for voluntary quarantine.
