As Bloomberg reported this week, Italy and Germany switched positions at the last minute on a bill that would ban the use of internal combustion engines in the European Union from 2035. Last year, the bill was already agreed by all EU countries, and in February 2023 by the European Parliament.
As the agency now reports, this was insisted on by local companies Ferrari and Porsche, which had enough of the status of “national icons” to influence the passage of the bill. The move, according to Bloomberg, “shocked Brussels.”
Automakers are seeking an exemption for e-fuel, a “zero-carbon” internal combustion engine fuel produced from electricity and renewable sources that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions to zero.
According to the publication, the non-approval of the law that prohibits internal combustion engines has already generated criticism from representatives of the automotive industry. The companies are not happy that while they are investing tens of billions of dollars in electric cars, Porsche is building an e-fuel plant in Chile and is not going to launch an electric version of its 911 sports car.
The Financial Times writes that a failure to transition to electric cars by 2035 could seriously affect EU plans to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050. Poland said it would vote against the initiative, while Bulgaria said it would abstain. to vote.
